This new exhibit, open free to the public, focuses on an outstanding collection of rare and exquisitely illustrated books encompassing the history of architecture and landscape design from the late 15th through mid-20th Century.  Part of one of the finest civic collections on architecture in the country, the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library’s - Central Library’s collection, assembled from the 1860s to the 1940s, served as an educational resource and inspiration for generations of architects who created the built treasures Buffalo, New York celebrates today. Direct examples from the books that inspired particular Buffalo buildings are discussed in the exhibit, which will be on display through March 2018.

BUILDING BUFFALO was curated by three experts - local architectural historian Francis Kowsky, Vassar College art history professor Nicholas Adams and the Library’s Rare Book Curator Amy Pickard.  A catalogue written by the curators which details the assembly of the Library’s vast collection and connects the illustrations in its books is available for purchase by calling 716-858-7182.  The catalogue is in memory of Theodore "Ted" Lownie (1936-2017) who left a strong imprint on the city's historic architecture.
