Liz Lessner’s exhibition, Interstitial Castings, uses sculpture to capture the negative space between two people engaged in therapeutic interactions. Prior to her exhibition, Lessner will be in residence at Buffalo Arts Studio working with Tri-Main Center tenants to create a series of sculptures through a process of conversation, community building, and collaboration.

Lessner’s work stems from a framing of resonant gestures that ritualize and familiarize psychological narratives. Her objects and spaces reframe the processing of memories, inter-personal interactions, and conceptions of self. By working with Buffalo based Physical & Occupational therapy groups, Deaf Services, and human service organizations such as Aspire WNY Lessner will research the unique and intimate gestural communications that these groups use. Working with these groups is an opportunity for Lessner to expand her ongoing project of Interstitial Casting. Interstitial Castings are negative space castings of people engaged in choreographies of the intimate. Spending time with these groups and working with them to represent their unique gestural communications is an opportunity to investigate different communication strategies and reassess choreographies of the intimate that are often taken for granted.
