Islamic bindings differ from Western style bindings in that their primary function is to protect the documents. Because of this the sewing is designed to fail to protect the precious pages inside, while the binding is often box like, to contain any loose pages. They are designed to lay flat, not stand on their spine and are renowned for their decorative beauty. Students will have a chance to learn the fundamentals of the Islamic style in this partial leather binding, while learning the historic precedents of the style and examining the range of possibilities for this technique. Students are encouraged to bring their own 6x6 images for the front and back covers – photographs printed on matte paper, hand drawn illustrations or paintings will all work wonderfully, or you can use a decorative paper supplied by the instructor. Cost: $75 / $70 Members and Students with valid ID (includes $10 materials fee) (+ $2.50 Service Fee)
